Feministsf.org was first designed as a series of web pages in December 1994, and got its own domain name in 1999/2000. (Well, I bought the domain name in 1996 or 1997; but I didn't get it fully set up until several years later.) In 1994, I [Laura Quilter] couldn't find any information about feminist sf on the web, and by way of teaching myself HTML, I decided to make some web pages about authors I liked, and feminism in sf. I did a page on Sheri Tepper first, since I was reading all her books at the time; then Ursula Le Guin, and a general bibliography of other feminist sf I knew of. Since then I've made it into a much more comprehensive fan-site; somewhat more of a research site; and a home for 2 feminist sf listserves. The site still remains literature oriented although I stay in touch with other formats (movies, TV, comics, etc.).

Numerous, uncounted people have helped along the way. People have written reviews, suggested alternative designs, sent in corrections, responded to questions for information about particular titles, and even developed and maintained whole sections of the site at different times. Since I've been so busy with other aspects of my life, I have not been a successful coordinator of assistance, and the most successful use has been the one that other people just did, without waiting for me: the ongoing book discussion group on the feminist sf listserves.

I fund & maintain the site all on my own, which wasn't a big deal when I was salaried, and is a bit more of a problem now that I'm living in the red on student loans. But it's completely worth it to me, because I get email from people telling me that they love the site, found great authors from the site, or that the site was critical to them in writing their theses or dissertations (I love those).
